Wednesday Remix Club #11

I really think that Tha Alkaholiks are one of the best rap groups ever. I mean, I think they really got it. Rap is party music that shouldn't be taken too seriously. They got funny and clever rhymes and they can rap their asses off to boot. And they got dope beats. I kinda stopped checking for them when they got all Jimi Hendrix and changed their name to just 'Tha Liks' and when Tash tried to get all superstar, but they still are one of the best to me. Here's a little gem from them.

The Odd Couple

Now here's an interesting musical tidbit. Back before he was the king of punchlines, Chino XL was in a fledgling little group that put out a couple of promos but never saw any proper release. It was good stuff that signaled the arrival of a solid newcomer on the scene, and led into a relatively well known career for dude. So I just finished revisiting one of these early 12" and whilst doing some research on the group found that his partner was none other than house legend Kerri Chandler. Pretty interesting, and fascinating, to me as in Cali the house and hip hop scenes were very segregated at the time, so this kind of collaboration was unheard of at best. Here's a more in-depth post with more tracks from another website, but keep in mind they have mislabled the track I'm posting here as a solo Chino XL effort, when in actuality it was the first of two 12" that this group put out. Enjoy Kerri doing his best Mista Lawnge impression.

Wednesday Remix Club #10

So, the Beastie Boys may have verged into caricature territory for many folks, but suffice it to say, they've had an extremely successful and quality career. I mean, they even had a better overall career than Run-D.M.C. if you really think about it. Plus they are always putting out their stuff on vinyl, and put out lots of remixes and special limited edition type stuff for their fans, which is always appreciated by obsessive-compulsive collectro nerds like myself. One way this manifested itself was their use of local talent for remixes. When the boys were still living in LA, they enlisted tons of local hip hop cats to create remixes for them. This is a great example: We Came From Beyond's Mike Nardone throwing down a sweet remix for the Ill Communication banger Sure Shot. It was also remixed by Large Professor and The Prunes. Enjoy.

Wednesday Remix Club #9

So, I got a little personal story behind this one. I had a major crush on this girl when I lived in LA, and this was back in my ultra-shy-about-sex years so I was not making any moves on this chica. Well, she was kinda going through a DJ groupie phase, so when I didn't step up to bat, she bounced. Enter Red Foo, son of Berry Gordy (yes, that Berry Gordy), personable, good looking, nice big-ass SUV (compared to my 4-cylinder Camry) and a budding little hip hop career to boot. Needless to say, he was the dude I loved to hate for a quick minute. Until he laced me with a free copy of this record. The OG mix on the A-side is aight, but the B-side wins again with an ultra-funky remix. Not much happened for dude on the music front, but he's got some sort of myspace-y personals website now. Good to see that Motown $$$ hard at work!
